Shell Cansolv has announced that the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from combusted natural gas is now successfully underway at Lanxess’ chrome chemicals production facility in Newcastle, South Africa

Shell Cansolv has supplied Lanxess — a producer of specialty chemicals — with its patented process, engineering services and its patented CO2 amine absorbent.

A new system has been incorporated into the facility that combusts locally sourced natural gas in conventional boilers to generate steam, allowing for the removal of CO2 from the flue gas generated.

According to Shell Cansolv, this installation is the first deployment of the company’s post-combustion CO2 capture system in the chemicals production industry.

The plant in Newcastle has been designed to capture 481 cubic metres of CO2 per day.

The captured CO2 will be used as a feedstock for chemical production, saving Lanxess from purchasing the gas, company sources said.

The Cansolv CO2 Capture System has employed a regenerable technology that captures up to 90 per cent of CO2 emissions.
