South African Petroleum Refineries (SAPREF) has awarded Fluor Corporation a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract for its Clean Fuels II Project in Durban
The project is expected to upgrade the SAPREF refinery, thereby improving the quality of transportation fuels by reducing levels of sulfur, benzene and aromatics.
Peter Oosterveer, president of Fluor’s Energy & Chemicals Group, said, “This award builds on our significant clean fuels expertise as well as Fluor’s ongoing site support work with SAPREF in South Africa for nearly 20 years.”
The agreement also allows for the potential of an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract that may be signed at a later date.
Booked in Q1 2013, the value of the contract has yet to have been disclosed.
SAPREF is a joint venture between Shell SA Refining and BP Southern Africa. This contract will be the first to be executed in Africa under Shell’s enterprise framework agreement with Fluor, company sources said.
