The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has announced that it has acquired a crawler crane from the USA-based Manitowoc for its oil and gas terminal at the Takoradi Port, Ghana

Owusu Koranteng, acting director of Takoradi Port, said, “The Manitowoc 600 crane, which is believed to be the biggest of its kind in West Africa, would be able to lift all kinds of cargo, including heavy machinery for the Takoradi Port expansion work and for the oil and gas rig offshore.”

Manitowoc said in a statement that the assembly of the crane would begin on 17 November 2014 and would take two weeks to complete before the crane starts operations on 7 December 2014.

Koranteng said the manufacturers of the crane had arrived at Takoradi Port and had selected eight Ghanaians nationals for training to maintain the crane.

Manitowoc business is comprised of two segments – cranes and foodservice equipment. The company has operations in 26 countries around the world.
