Multi-client geoscience data provider TGS has introduced a new imaging technology, the Dynamic Matching Full Wave Inversion (DM FWI)

The new imaging approach uses seismic reflection and refraction information to automatically update the velocity model, allowing for high-quality images in geologically complicated areas.

DM FWI provides a step-change in the quality of the velocity model, facilitating clearer and geologically consistent images of depth-major factors for successful exploration. The TGS inversion based algorithm can significantly reduce the time of the image cycle and the ambiguity of interpretation. It works in conjunction with new Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) survey designs and also applies to modern towed survey designs.

The DM FWI approach can be applied in a wide range of geological settings with particular relevance in geologically complex areas such as salt basins and where shallow gas anomalies exist-allowing for faster and more obvious geological interpretations.

Jan Schoolmeesters, executive vice-president of operations at TGS, said, “Over the last several months, our R&D and imaging teams have been tasked with developing and implementing new seismic imaging technologies our customers with step-changes in quality, value, efficiency, and accuracy.

“DM FWI is the first realisation of that focused effort, and we can now provide our clients with data-driven models that enhance interpretations like never before. We appreciate the significant pressure that E&Ps are under to maximise efficiency, reduce cycle times and cut costs and therefore need reduced subsurface uncertainty to help them de-risk prospects faster.”
