BP has made its eighteenth discovery on ultra-deepwater Block 31 offshore Angola.

The discovery, named Oberon, is in the southern portion of the block about 335 km northwest of Luanda and 4.3 km to the northeast of the Dione discovery.


Oberon-1 was drilled in a water depth of 1,624 m and reached a total depth of 3,622 m. The well test results confirmed the capacity of the reservoir to flow in excess of 5,000 bpd under production conditions. The well was drilled by Transocean drillship GSF Explorer, which will continue to operate in Angola for BP through September of this year.
Sonangol is the concessionaire of Block 31. BP Exploration (Angola) Ltd., as operator, holds 26.67 per cent. The other interest owners in Block 31 are Esso Exploration and Production Angola (Block 31) Ltd. with 25 per cent, Sonangol P&P with 20 per cent, Statoil Angola A.S. with 13.33 pe rcent, Marathon International Petroleum Angola Block 31 Ltd. with 10 percent and Total subsidiary TEPA (BLOCK 31) Ltd. with five per cent.
