Origin Energy has announced that L-8 operator Apache Kenya has begun drilling the Mbawa Prospect offshore Kenya

The Mbawa 1 exploration well was spudded on 10 August 2012 and, according to Origin, the drillship Deepsea Metro 1 will take approximately 60 days to drill to a total depth of 3,250m subsea in a water depth of 864 metres.

Origin has said it would advise the market following the conclusion of operations at the well, which will be plugged and abandoned following the completion of the evaluation programme.

The L8/Mbawa Joint Venture is led by operator Apache who holds a 50 per cent interest, while Origin Energy through its wholly-owned subsidiaries holds a 20 per cent interest, with Pancontinental Oil and Gas and Tullow Kenya each holding 15 per cent interests in the JV.
