International marine and engineering consulting firm LOC has seen strong adoption of its remote dynamic positioning (DP) inspection service, since its launch in early June

According to LOC, this offer has been adopted by a number of clients including Helix Energy Solutions, Crystal Pool and Gardline.

The remote service is set to enable clients to meet DP systems compliance efficiently, quickly and cost effectively by removing the need for an external surveyor to attend on site. The service was initially launched as a solution to the COVID-19 crisis, but it is recognised the benefits apply equally at other times.

The programme has been developed by LOC’s in-house DP specialists, ensuring that clients receive the same level of precision, technical knowhow, and expertise as LOC’s traditional ‘in-person’ DP offering. It offers the flexibility to cover different technologies, depending on the client’s preference. The test programme can be spread over time to meet the vessel’s needs and to work around commercial and other commitments, such as charters.

The remote service combines LOC’s established practical field experience in DP, with integrated technology. The use of technology enables continuous, real time remote monitoring, with the trials undertaken by the vessel, in the usual way. Where real time data communication is difficult, data is recorded, and the trail extended to allow proper review. Recoded data also enables LOC to offer clients additional onboard staff training, through live examples.

Marc Walden, QHSE manager at Helix Energy Solutions, said, “The flexibility of approach and innovation in conducting the trials remotely allowed us to meet our own and our clients vessel assurance requirements while meeting the standard as set out within IMCA guidance for our offshore construction vessels in a very challenging situation.”

Sen Abhayasinghe, group technical authority for DP Services at LOC Group, added, “While it was initially launched as a solution to travel limitations during the COVID-19 crisis, it is also clear the benefits apply equally at more normal times of operations.”
