Eni has signed a deal with DR Congo to explore hydrocarbons in the country’s coastal basin with the aim of expanding its foothold in sub-Saharan Africa’s oil producer

Eni’s new chief executive Claudio Descalzi signed the contract for onshore and deep-water exploration acreage with DR Congo’s energy minister Andre Raphael Loemba in Brazzaville, the company said in a statement.

The Italian explorer, which has been active in DR Congo since 1968, said in February this year that it had discovered fields with estimated reserves of 1.2bn barrels of oil and 30bn cu m of gas in the central African country’s Marine XII offshore block.

Eni said that it produces around 450,000 boepd in sub-Saharan Africa including DR Congo, Ghana, Gabon, Nigeria and Kenya, among others.
