The exploration well, on an acreage of 31,521 square kilometers, reached a total depth of 3253 feet, Energean said in a statement. After drilling through heavily carstified limestones, the well encountered a succession of alternating thick shale intervals and sandstones until hitting a granitic basement.

“While elevated gas readings were detected in parts of the sedimentary sections above the basement, no hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir rocks were encountered,” the statement said.

Energean abandoned the well without a production test and after logging the well and acquiring a vertical seismic profile. As part of the committed exploration plan, Energean said it is now preparing the Sino Tharwa ST-2 rig to move to drill Prospect-B, about 100 kilometres south-west of the WKO-1X location.
