p>A 200,000 BPD CAPACITY refinery is to be built in Nigerias northern Zanfara state, according to Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi, the states governor. He said the state government has earmarked US$1.94 bn for the refinery project.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC)  said that Shinkafi submitted the feasibility report of the refinery to Austen Oniwon, NNPC's group managing director in Abuja.

Nigeria has four refineries but they all work below their installed capacities and the country relies heavily on imports to provide gasoline products to its 150 mn people daily.

Oniwon said the proposal by Zanfara to build a refinery was "in alignment with the corporation's vision to establish more refineries across the country to augment petroleum products supply and distribution to the people."

He said the NNPC would put in place a "dedicated team of experts" to study the feasibility report and "come up with the economic viability of the project."

Oniwon appealed to private investors to be part of the hydrocarbon industry by investing in the sector.
