ABB’s NiTemp non-invasive temperature sensor offers a simpler and safer way to measure process temperature without shutting down a pipeline, drilling a hole or installing a thermowell

The company stated that with its double sensor architecture and specially developed calculation algorithm, NiTemp enhances safety and reduces installation costs without sacrificing the quality of the measurement.

The device is designed for surface measurement and eliminates the need for a thermowell, completely avoiding pro-process intrusion and greatly increasing the safety of people, plants and the environment.

As such, it can be used in a variety of applications, such as processes with hazardous media, special hygiene requirements and/or stringent cleaning requirements and high-pressure processes with high bending loads or use with abrasive media.

With the sensor being able to be installed and maintained without shutting down a process, plant availability is improved and system costs are lowered, helping to reduce the cost of capex by at least 30 per cent.

The new temperature sensor uses innovative technology with proven components, such as standard in-sets widely used in the industry. It was developed through direct testing and feedback from major customers in the oil and gas, chemical, food and beverage industries.

The device is suitable for different media and pipe diameters and can be used in all areas of the process industry and power generation.

NiTemp has global explosion protection approvals up to zone 0. It is particularly advantageous to use liquid media with low viscosity, high thermal conductivity and/or turbulent flow in metal pipes.

ABB provides integrated products, services and solutions to help customers in the oil, gas and chemicals industry optimise their safety, productivity and energy efficiency while minimising cost, schedule and risk.
