Action for Burns and Children (ABC) started in 2008 by Cripps Sears to help in the prevention of domestic burn and injuries to children through fire and burn prevention education. It also works beyond South Africa with the rehabilitation of seriously burned children.

During his interview with Oil Review Africa, Mike Cripps, founder and chairman of Cripps Sears and Partners, said, “Cripps Sears and Partners, itself celebrating its 45th anniversary as a leading executive search firm, has a very strong legacy and history of working in Africa. Through ABC we wanted to support communities and in particular children who have been victims of burns in the townships in South Africa.”

Access to energy is an issue which often leads to fires and also destroys multiple dwellings. Lack of reliable electricity supply often leads to communities using kerosene-fuelled stoves, lamps and candles for light. Many a times electricity is obtained illegally through exposed wires that often lead to tragic accidents.

On an international scale, ABC is involved with the European Burn Association (EBA) exchange programme for professionals allied to medicine, such as nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychotherapists. Multinational two-day workshops are held at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town with therapists from the hospital funded by funded by ABC and the Phoenix Burn Project.
