p>NIGERIAS SOUTHEASTERN IMO state is planning to establish a Greenfield refinery in the state, according to a recent statement by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC).

According to the statement, Imo state Governor Ikedi Ohakim said during a courtesy visit to Austen Oniwon, NNPC's group managing director, that the refinery will be built in partnership with the corporation.

Ohakim said Imo state has the highest gas deposit in Nigeria, adding that he visited the NNPC to iron out details on establishing the refinery.

He said the state wanted to eliminate any bottleneck or any likely bureaucracy that may come in the way of the proposed refinery.

Details or the cost of the refinery were not given but Ohakim said if established it would provide jobs for unemployed youths in Imo state, which he explained has recorded in the last ten years the highest number of university applicants in Nigeria.

Oniwon commended the state government for providing security for NNPC pipelines in Imo, adding that the rate of attack on NNPC facilities has been reduced.

The NNPC and Chinese investors have agreed to establish three greenfield refineries and a petrochemical complex in the Nigerian states of Bayelsa, Lagos and Kogi.
